What is the role of the SPCA?
SPCA is the only charity with the legal powers to help animals in need and bring animal offenders to justice. Our Inspectors are appointed under the Animal Welfare Act 1999 which provides powers to investigate cruelty, abuse, neglect and abandonment.
What to do with people who abuse animals?
If you think someone you know is abusing animals, please speak up. The best thing you can do is report your suspicions of cruelty to your local law enforcement agency, humane organization, animal control agency or taxpayer-funded animal shelter.

Why is the SPCA against 1080?
SPCA is against the use of poisons to kill animals due to the level of suffering they cause, as well as the nature of their use. We would like to see a ban on the use of poisons such as 1080, because these substances cause such intense and prolonged suffering to animals that we believe their use can never be justified.
What are the disadvantages of 1080?
Opposition to 1080 includes arguments over the poison’s cruelty and its effects on non-targeted animal species. There are also claims it can taint water supplies, the food chain, and the local environment. The death from 1080 has been described as “painful, torturous and slow” by SAFE, an animal rights group.
