Can Silly Putty expire?
SILLY PUTTY is made primarily from silicone and color pigments. If Silly Putty is left out of the container over a period of several years, it may harden due to other ingredients contained in the putty. The other ingredients are proprietary and cannot be shared.
How long does it take for Silly Putty to harden?
In general, most small items made with air-dry clay will dry/harden overnight but some might take longer, perhaps 24 or even 36 hrs. (You’ll want to dry items a non-cold, non-humid area, with good air circulation reaching all sides of the item.
How do you refresh Silly Putty?
Soak your putty in water overnight if it’s still too firm. Pour several spoonfuls of lukewarm water on top of the putty and cover it with the lid. Let the putty sit overnight, then mix and knead in any excess water.
Can you get silly putty wet?
Silly Putty will dissolve when in contact with an alcohol; after the alcohol evaporates, the material will not exhibit its original properties. If Silly Putty is submerged in warm or hot water, it will become softer and thus “melt” much faster. It also becomes harder to remove small amounts of it from surfaces.

How do you fix runny putty?
Add an extra ¼ tsp (1 g) of baking soda to the slime if you have made it with clear glue. If you have used white glue, add an extra ½ tsp (2 g) of baking soda. Use a spoon to mix the extra baking soda into the slime and then knead it for 2-3 minutes. Add more baking soda if the slime is still too watery.

- Mix together a 1 to 1 mixture of glue and water. (I made a half size batch for this demonstration.)
- Dissolve 1 tsp of borax into the 4 oz (1/2 cup) warm water. Pour borax water into the glue mixture and stir.
- Pick up the glue glob and squish it around for a few moments.
