Here’s a picture of my 1979 GMC with a 427 I bought new in 1978, before they started putting the smog pumps on starting Jan 1 1979. It’s all orginal even the tarp. The 366’s have an adapter plate between the block and the truck bellhousing. the adapter would bolt on to a 454.

The 427 will give a lot more hp. you will climb the hill two gears higher than a 366. I’m thinking you can still get a new GM engine and they not as pricey as you might think. How to build a tall deck 427 based big block?

4.25 stroke + 6.385 rods + off-the-shelf 454 normal-pin-height pistons + steel shim head gasket. Deck the block .020 to .030 to bring the piston closer to the top. You can use a composition head gasket; but you need to take more off the deck. If you can find a set of 6.405 rods; they were built to do this.
