Can you keep an Oscar in a 55 gallon tank?

Yes, you can keep an Oscar Fish in 55 gallon tank. However, after some time its growth will be stunted once it reaches 10 inches. Oscar Fish can get pretty large and it can grow up to 20 inches.

How often should you change Oscar water?

Oscars are very messy fish, so fish tank maintenance is paramount. Perform your weekly 10-15% water changes, so that your Oscar always has clean water and the waste that is not processed by the aquarium filter is removed.

How often should you change the water in an Oscar fish tank?

Start thinking about an aquarium in excess of 100 gallons. I can absolutely promise you that trying to keep two Oscars in anything less than 100 gallons will result in extra tank maintenance. You’ll find yourself having to change the water more than once a week and carry out filter cleaning more often.

Is it OK to put an Oscar in a soft water tank?

Oscars have a habit of scratching themselves up or even ripping out large chunks of flesh, either of which, for a fish, can become life threatening. Finally, remember that Oscars are softwater fish. Unless your water is extremely soft, you will want to avoid anything that will tend to raise the pH of the water in the tank.

How big of an aquarium do you need for an Oscar?

There is plenty of debate about the minimum size for an Oscar Tank. I believe that the smallest aquarium an Oscar should be kept in is a 55 gallon (48x12x21 inches). This is not ideal, but it can be done. In a 55 gallon tank I can only recommend one Oscar with no tank mates and minimal decorations.

Do you need a heater for an Oscar fish tank?

You will need a heater and a filter running every single day of the year. Because Oscars are tropical fish the aquarium water must be kept warm at all times. A 55-gallon aquarium is going to require a minimum of 200 W of heating that must be switched on all the time (imagine leaving the house lights on 24/7 in two or three rooms of your house).

Which is better one or two Oscars in a 50 gallon tank?

I rather have two in a tank than one because so they can grow together. They do tend to fight a lot if there isn’t enough space, and the most dominant one will kill the other especially if they are both males, I would say for a 50 gallon you should go with one, not only because of this but also because of size and bioload issues
