Penelope is a classical hero because of her strength. Although she is not described as physically strong, she is mentally strong. In the epic, it is clear the Odysseus has been on his journey for 20 years. The suitors, who admire Penelope and want to marry her, are an implied pain to her because of their stupidity.

In the spiritual sense Odysseus is a hero, because he remains faithful and loyal to his wife and household. We find out through the Odyssey that Odysseus was the man that saved the Greeks in the Trojan War and helped them win this terrible war. He came up with the idea of the Trojan horse.
