Where voles are found?
Voles live in a wide variety of habitats at elevations ranging from sea level to high mountains. In North America they range from Alaska southward to the mountains of Mexico and Guatemala. In Eurasia they can be found in the British Isles and across Europe and Asia to southern China, Taiwan, and Japan.
Where does a vole make its home?
Habitat. Voles can be found throughout North America in dense grassy fields, gardens, meadows, woodlands, along lakes and rivers and in agricultural areas. Voles make their nests in underground burrows around tree roots, ground cover and beneath fruit trees.
Does a vole live underground?
Voles do much of their work underground, but there is no visible tunnel or mound of dirt above ground when they build their tunnels. Voles leave exit holes above the ground, but their tunnels are much deeper than those of gophers and moles. A vole travels underground to target your plants.
Where do vole live in the winter?
Voles do not hibernate during the winter months. They are active even during the winter and when snow is on the ground. They seem perfectly happy and actually do very well under the protection of the snow cover chewing away on the turfgrass plants.
Do voles die in winter?
Voles are active during the winter since they do not hibernate in the cold winter months. Their activity underground is masked by the fallen snow. Don’t be fooled, voles are still alive and active during this time even if we can’t see them.
What will kill a vole?
If your yard is small, vole traps can be used. Vole traps are simply mouse traps that have been placed in the yard, particularly near where known burrows are or were. Rodent poison can also be an effective way of killing voles. When using poison though, be aware of the other animals in your yard.
How far do voles travel?
Water voles do not travel very far from their burrows. A female will have a territory of about 30 to 150 metres and males range over about twice that. Young water voles will travel up to about 1 kilometre when they leave the ‘nest’ in summer or autumn and disperse into the surrounding area.
How big do voles get?
Adult voles range in length from 5-8 inches including their short fur covered tail. Voles have a short stocky body, short legs, small dark eyes, and fully developed ears that are partially hidden from view.
What does a meadow vole look like?
Voles, a.k.a. field or meadow mice, are little brownish grayish rodents with tiny ears, small eyes, and a short tail. Like other rodents, voles have four toes on their front paws and five on the rear.
What to do about voles?
Voles will burrow beneath a plant then eradicate the root system, leaving no chance for the plant’s survival. The best method of getting rid of voles is to use vole poison. This poison cannot be purchased over the counter in a farm store.
