What does it mean when my canary is puffed up?
Canaries normally puff up their feathers when they are sleeping or if they are cold. If they are not sleeping, however, and they remain puffed up for long periods of time, it may mean that your canary is unwell. Inspect their droppings. When you change the cage liner every day, check their droppings.
How can Canaries get mites?
A bird can be infected with air sac mites when in close contact with another bird who is already infected with them. The air sac mites will be transmitted after coughing or sneezing releases a small amount of moisture with the mites into the air.

If your canary doesn’t jump on the chance to clean off in a shallow dish of water, consider misting it with warm water.

The parasites can be present all the way from the nose of the infected bird to the tiny air sacs in the lungs….Those with a severe infection, however, may display such symptoms as:
- Breathing problems (including making whistling and clicking sounds)
- Open mouth breathing.
- Bobbing of the tail.
