Is Lort Smith a no kill shelter?
The Lort Smith Adoption Centre offers sanctuary, rehabilitation, welfare and a new home for surrendered animals. Our Adoption Centre rehomes approximately 600 surrendered animals every year. Lort Smith will never euthanise an animal capable of being rehomed.
Is Lort Smith free?
Fees and charges Part of our mission is to provide care for animals of people with limited means. However, we do not provide a free service and do require payment.
Why you should adopt animals?
Because you’ll save a life. The number of euthanized animals could be reduced dramatically if more people adopted pets instead of buying them. When you adopt, you save a loving animal by making them part of your family and open up shelter space for another animal who might desperately need it.
When to adopt a cat from a shelter?
Give her time to adjust. Your cat may have been happy & relaxed in the shelter or their foster home, but since then, they may have been examined by a vet, put in a cat carrier, taken a car trip, and now are in a total alien universe filled with strange sights, sounds and smells. Every cat is different, just like every home is different.

Where do I put my new cat when I bring her home?
If you’re following the tip on in our Bringing Your New Cat Home article, kitty is in her starter room. That should be a safe place for her to take her time to get adjusted to how your house sounds & smells. Wait to introduce her to friends, family, and other household pets until she’s out from under the bed.
How long does it take a new cat to adjust to a new home?
Every cat is different, just like every home is different. It can take a day, 5 days, a couple of weeks or more for your new cat to relax. 2 weeks is an average adjustment time for most cats.
Where can I go to adopt a kitten?
Get acquainted: Visit HSC’s main shelter at 2700 Toomey Avenue to meet all of our adorable kittens and cats, and plan to spend lots of quality time interacting with the cat you’d like to adopt. Many times an animal’s behavior is different when away from other animals or in a kennel.

Elfilou I already have a cat bed that he does really like (it is on the bed and he sometimes jumps up and kneads it purring when I’m sitting on the floor.) However, he normally doesn’t use it because it is exposed on the bed. Maybe I will try placing it in the corner of the floor instead…
