How are values created?
A ‘value’ is commonly formed by a particular belief that is related to the worth of an idea or type of behaviour. Values can influence many of the judgments we make as well as have an impact on the support we give clients. It is important that we do not influence client’s decisions based on our values.
Where do our morals and values come from?
Some people think that our conscience has a divine source, but a humanist might respond that such instincts and emotions have a more natural origin. For humanists, our moral instincts and values don’t come from somewhere outside of humanity. The origins of morality lie inside human beings.
Do morals come from God?
Therefore, all moral commands are the commands of a single, external agent. We are heavily influenced by moral commands and other commands of reason. Thus, the commands of morality (and the commands of reason more generally) require a god because they are, and can only be, the commands of one.
Do our morals come from religion?
Religion and morality are not synonymous. Morality does not necessarily depend upon religion, though for some, this is “an almost automatic assumption.” According to The Westminster Dictionary of Christian Ethics, religion and morality “are to be defined differently and have no definitional connections with each other.
