NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — The Wurstfest Association of New Braunfels, announced on Thursday that it has canceled it’s 2020 festival due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.
How do you become an Opa at Wurstfest?
First, you become a Kleine Opa, meaning you are a non-voting member that must reapply annually for membership. This is an apprentice position a member must serve for a minimum of three years before earning “shareholder” (Opa) status.

Is wurstfest German?
The festival’s 2021 iteration will take place November 5-14, offering German-themed entertainment, food and fun on the Wurstfest Grounds in Landa Park. The event will be the organizers’ 60th. Last year’s cancellation over COVID-19 concerns marked the first time New Braunfels had ever scrapped the event.
When did wurstfest burned?
The festival went “big-time” in 1963, moving downtown to the Rathskeller (a burned-out department store basement, now the New Braunfels Utilities parking lot) with an event scheduled every night of Wurst Week.
