Why does a stray cat have a clipped ear?

Why does a stray cat have a clipped ear?

Ear-tipping is the universally accepted way to tell whether a feral cat has been neutered or spayed. This is typically performed as part of a TNR (trap-neuter-release) program. TNR programs save hundreds of cats each year and are one of the only ways to safely manage the feral cat population.

How do you tell if a stray has been fixed?

Check the Ear: Cats are often tattooed inside of their ear to relay information about the cat. If there is an “M” inside the cat’s ear, that means the animal is micro-chipped. Any other tattoos, or indications like clipped ears, generally mean the cat has been spayed or neutered.

What do you do to a feral cat’s ear?

In most cases, ear tipping and notching are used on feral cats. Some veterinarians will tattoo the inside of a pet cat’s ear as a way to identify that it has been spayed or neutered.

This practice is utilized by many trap and release programs to limit the reproduction of feral cats thus controlling colony populations. In this case, one of the cat’s ears (usually the left) has about a quarter of an inch of the tip removed — just enough to give the ear a “flat” tip.

Why do some cats have a notch or tipped ear?

Why do some cats have a notch or tipped ear? Ear notching or ear tipping is a universal sign that a feral cat has been spayed or neutered (desexed), vaccinated and then returned to its colony. Veterinarians notch or tip the ear during spay/neuter surgery which helps to identify a trap, neuter, return (TNR) cat from a distance.

What kind of cat has a pointy ear?

If you have community cats (also called feral or stray cats) in your neighborhood, you may have noticed that some or all of these outdoor cats have an ear that is squared off instead of pointy at the tip. Are these cats with the tipped ears making a new fashion statement?

Is it painful to clip a feral cat’s ears?

If you’re interested in trap-neuter-release but are worried that the ear tipping will be painful and traumatizing to the feral cat, don’t be. While the veterinarian is clipping the ear, the little one won’t be aware as she’ll be under general anesthesia.

What does a cat with an ear cut off look like?

It looked as if almost half the ear was cut off on a couple of them while just the tip was taken in others, but they all healed up and are happy and healthy 2 years later. It’s weird because I’ve never seen another ear tipped cat around here and we have a lot of ferals in the area. This cat’s been hanging around for at least a year now.
