Why are American pikas important?
As Varner notes in the podcast, pikas provide a number of ecosystem services. They are also “ecosystem engineers” in that their foraging helps promote the diversity and distribution of various plant species and nutrients. The collective research suggests pikas play an important role in ecosystem biodiversity.
What is being done to protect pikas?
To protect the pika on the federal level, we petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list the full species as federally endangered (also in 2007). After the Fish and Wildlife Service failed to take action, we hauled the agency to court in 2008.
