Almost every family has an agricultural setup, every home has a garden and a barn for livestock. Rural people do a lot of farming, there is always something on the garden. Most families keep livestock like cattle, sheep, goats and chickens. This makes it easier for people to survive with an incredibly low income.

Where does government support agriculture in South Africa?
Only 10,0% of the households involved in agriculture reported getting agricultural-related support from the government during the year preceding the survey. The only provinces where significant support was provided for farming households were Eastern Cape (25,1%) and Northern Cape (17,3%).

People living in these areas usually don’t have a strong source of income, the population is dominated by senior citizens and younger children who are still in school. There are fewer people of working age as they have gone to urban areas to look for jobs.
