What is a Subpod?

The Subpod is an in-garden compost system that doubles up as a garden seat. The unit is simple to assemble, then can be tucked into a new or existing raised garden bed or dug into a ground level garden. Once it’s in the soil, you add composting worms and let them settle in for a week.

The Subpod will be fine in a shaded area, you will just need to choose plants that are suitable for shady conditions. If the Subpod is in a sunny position you will need to choose plants that like the sun 🙂 If the soil is cooler, they will just slow down and be fine as long as the ground does not freeze.

Can I add more worms to my Subpod?

Add at least 1,000 composting worms to your Subpod on top of the bedding material. Remember, the more worms you add initially, the faster your Subpod will reach maximum feeding capacity. It is good to keep your worms with the bedding material they were packed with as worms may come with castings, eggs, and food.

Worms don’t need a tremendous amount of food to live well in newspaper bedding. And below that are cucumber peelings and cantaloupe rinds that I have just added to the worm bin. Some people cut up the food into small pieces to speed up the process but I just put it in whole and it still works fine.
