What is a penis cyst? Sometimes, the glands that produce oil on the penis and scrotum (called sebaceous glands) can become blocked, turning into cysts (a tissue sac that can contain clear liquid or pus). Usually, cysts don’t need any treatment.
What causes Balanoposthitis in dogs?
In dogs, balanoposthitis is caused by a disruption in the integumentary system, such as a wound or intrusion of a foreign body. A dog with this condition behaves normally, with the exception of excessive licking at the prepuce, and a yellow green, pus-like discharge is usually present.
Do penile cysts go away?
If they’re popped, the area around a cyst can become sore or infected. Cysts otherwise don’t need be treated and can go away on their own in a few weeks.
How do you treat a penile cyst?
To remove a cyst, your doctor will perform these steps:
- Apply local anesthesia to numb the area.
- Clean the penis with betadine or similar chemicals.
- Make a small cut on the skin above the cyst.
- Use a scalpel or similar instrument to remove connective tissue around the cyst.
- Use forceps to lift the cyst out of the penis.
What do you do after your dog mates?
Make sure that she does not have the opportunity to mate with any other dogs. Remember that estrus or ‘heat’ will continue for several more days and she could theoretically become pregnant from another dog during this period. After a planned mating, it is a good idea to allow her to rest quietly for a few hours.
How common are penile cysts?
Penile cysts are generally harmless, but it’s important to see your doctor for diagnosis. They can make sure that the bump isn’t the result of an underlying condition and advise you on any next steps. It’s possible, but not common, to develop more cysts depending on your health and underlying conditions.
Do cysts go away naturally?
Epidermoid cysts often go away without any treatment. If the cyst drains on its own, it may return. Most cysts don’t cause problems or need treatment. They are often not painful, unless they become inflamed or infected.
